Carnegie Mellon Racing is a student-led team dedicated to designing and building a fully electric, Formula-1–style race car for international Formula SAE competitions. Founded the Design Team within Carnegie Mellon Racing and co-led design efforts across branding, visual identity, and vehicle livery.
23e Livery Design
Carnegie Mellon Racing competes annually in Formula SAE, designing and building a new race car each year. With the newly founded design team, we led the overall exterior design, including full vehicle livery development.

Process
As this was the team’s first formal design effort, we developed foundational tools, workflows, and a reusable design system to enable the team to consistently create meaningful and cohesive liveries in future seasons.

We began by sketching and prototyping a range of pattern concepts that aligned with the team’s brand identity.

Once the core design and pattern system were defined, we translated the concepts into orthographic views of the car.

We finalized the design by integrating sponsor placements and considering how the livery would be physically applied to the car.

We then moved into KeyShot to render the livery on a 3D model, clearly visualizing how the design would appear in real life.

The livery was applied to the car by hand with the help of design and racing team members, and the completed vehicle competed in that year’s Formula SAE competition.

Marketing and Outreach
The design team also produced marketing and design assets to support recruiting and fundraising efforts, helping make the car’s development possible.

Reflection
This experience helped me grow as a leader, strengthening my ability to guide a team while collaborating closely with engineers and marketers. It was especially valuable to oversee the team’s overall brand direction and lead multiple projects, including merchandise, livery design, social media, and other marketing initiatives.
